Gardening Tips-How to air layer a plant

Air layering

is known that you grow the roots of a tree from its branch or trunk so you can make them smaller or get nicer shape of the tree, etc. using the technique shown in the video.

There are several ways to apply air layering but I'll use the simplest one which is air layering on a branch with moss wrapped.

How to do Air Layering

1. Do not unwrap or touch it after applying air layering.

Yes, I know how it feels, people want to see how it's doing with their air layering. So did I.

But please don't. Be patient and wait. Not moving the moss on the cut part is the tip I can think of.

In the video, I unwrapped it with the little roots coming out of the branch just to show how it looks but please do not cut the branch with the roots like this.

It's too early to transfer it to a pot. They need to grow more.

2. Usually, it helps for the roots to grow more if you cut the extra leaves in about the half or completely.

I always try to leave the leaves on because my goal to apply air layering is that I want to use the mini tree right after I cut it off so I can enjoy it in a pot. ( if it doesn't have any leaves or has the half cut ones, maybe it kind of looks ugly.)

3.Best season for air layering is May to June(since it's rainy season and the temperature stays 20 - 25 ℃. This is the best condition for air layering.) July to  August is still good too, just watch out how dry it gets while applying air layering since it's hot.

Anyways, I try it no matter what season it is and see how it goes.

Peel the first layer of the plant skin just like in the video and wrap it with moss.

If you are doing this indoor then keep watering it as you water the plant.( if it looks too much water wait till it starts looking like a little dry.)

If you are doing this outdoor, tie the top and bottom of the wrap tightly so it won't get dried and wait until roots come out

when it grows this much of roots (about 1 month) it's ready

Cut it off at the bottome of the moss and unwrap it.

You don't need to take off the moss. You can just pot it a pot with your planting soil.

I used New Zealand Sphagnum Moss to air layer this. No mix with any other soil. This Dried moss is basically for pet use but it is great for plantings and gardening as well
